Discover more about Suriname:

After a period of economic instability, Suriname is now completing a comprehensive structural reform in partnership with the IMF which is quickly resulting in an economic turnaround.  Forecast economic growth of 3%, single digit inflation, and reducing debt costs are all coming into place, as robust institutional frameworks including fiscal rules and transparency and accountability are instituted.

These reforms come across a backdrop of a transformation in Suriname’s economic fortunes following the discovery of commercial oil and gas reserves in 2020 and the decision by Total in October 2024 to start commercial development of their blocks. Reported oil and gas reserves are substantial, positioning Suriname as a significant future player in the energy sector alongside its neighbour, Guyana.

Oil Reserves: Estimates suggest that Suriname has approximately 2.4 billion barrels of crude oil reserves, according to Wood Mackenzie. Since 2020, explorers have discovered about 2.2 billion barrels of oil equivalent (boe) in recoverable resources.

Gas Reserves: The country’s natural gas reserves are estimated at 12.5 trillion cubic feet (tcf) by Wood Mackenzie.

Suriname will have national elections on 25th May 2025 to form the next Government to guide the country through this exciting time in its history.
